Tips for Hiring a Wedding Photographer

When choosing a wedding photographer, beware of how large internet-based companies operate. These businesses often present their services in ways that seem appealing but may leave you with hidden costs and unmet expectations. Here’s what you need to know before signing on the dotted line:

1. Digital Negatives Aren’t Always What They Seem

Many companies advertise that you’ll receive digital negatives, but what they don’t tell you is that these files may come with watermarks, making them unusable. To get unwatermarked versions, you may have to pay hefty fees—essentially purchasing the same images you thought were included in the package. Some companies even claim ownership of the photos, leaving you with little control over how you use them.

2. You May Not Choose Your Photographer

Some companies assign a photographer to your wedding just a few months in advance. What if you don’t like their style or personality? Weddings are intimate, and having the wrong person behind the lens can create unnecessary stress. For example, I once worked with a bride whose videographer upset her with insensitive comments during her preparations—it cast a shadow over her day. To avoid this, always meet your photographer beforehand, either through a Zoom call or, ideally, in person. Building a personal connection ensures you’re comfortable with the person who will be by your side for hours on your big day.

3. Know the Photography Style You Want

Some photographers advertise themselves as photojournalists, often favoring natural light over flash. While this approach can work beautifully, it has limitations in low-light conditions or venues with high ceilings and distant walls. I prefer a balanced approach using two off-camera flashes for creative lighting. This setup allows me to provide consistent, flattering results regardless of the environment, ensuring your photos capture the day perfectly.

4. Insurance Might Be Overlooked

Does your photographer have liability insurance? While companies claim it’s a requirement, they often don’t verify it. If something goes wrong, the subcontractor—not the company—could be held responsible. Always ask for proof of insurance to protect yourself and your venue.

5. Who Edits Your Photos?

Many companies outsource photo editing to third parties or even use AI for retouching. While this might save time, it can result in a lack of personal attention to your images. I believe editing is part of the artistic process and handle it myself, ensuring every photo reflects your unique day.

6. Hidden Costs and Delays

Additional services like custom editing, retouching, second shooters, or videographers often come with extra fees. Even delivery times can be misleading—while photographers may submit images within days, clients are often told it will take weeks to see their photos.

Why Personal Service Matters

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Don’t let hidden fees, lack of transparency, or impersonal service overshadow it. Choose a photographer who takes the time to understand your vision, respects your preferences, and is fully invested in creating memories you’ll cherish forever. By asking the right questions and prioritizing personal connection, you can ensure your photographer is a trusted partner in capturing your love story.

I work for a few of these companies. the pay is poor but I built a wonderful portfolio. I have learned to pull out my phone before I leave and ask the bride and groom to say a few words about my performance during their wedding day. I found if I wait I don't get many reviews I have been told that I can't have a review because I represent this awful company that the client now hates. But they said they really love the photos.
